Sitting down as a family at meal times is something that you should definitely be doing on a regular basis. There are multiple benefits of sitting down for a healthy and nutritious meal with the whole family, it’s not just about eating healthy food, lets take a look at some of the other benefits that come from family meal times with the kids.
Time to Talk
Family meal times are a great opportunity to catch up with your kids, sometimes it can be hard to get the time to talk properly with the family what with all the distractions that are constantly around us these days.
Ideally you would have family meal times on a daily basis but sometimes that isn’t possible with the busy lives we lead, so it’s a good idea to try and make healthy family meal time a regular thing on certain days that you know you can all be together. This way everyone knows when they need to make themselves available for this precious time of the week that everybody will enjoy.
Encouraging Healthy Eating by Setting an Example
As you know, kids like to copy what mummy and daddy do so if your kids see that you are eating healthy food, they will want to do the same.
Teaching Portion Size
Healthy family meal times are also a great opportunity to manage the portion sizes of your kids meals. Portion size is a very important part of kids eating healthy because it instills in them the amount of food that they should be putting on their plate which ultimately will discourage over eating.
Finding Out About Your Kids
When the whole family is sat around the table with no distractions such as TV, tablets, mobile phones etc. it means you can really get to know about your kids life’s and how they are getting on. Talking regularly like this will make you closer as a family and if your kids are having any issues or troubles they will be more likely to open up and share them with you.
Teaching Them How To Cook
It’s not just sitting down at the table for healthy meal times which benefits your kids. You can get them in the kitchen to help you prepare the meal too. I personally think it is very important to teach children how to cook healthy food. If your kids are old enough you could even let them take charge and cook the family meal every now and then. This is a great way to give them some independence and responsibility.
